Attorney Jeff Miller
Jeff has held various policy related positions at Disability Rights Texas (DRTx) starting in 2006, including work in the areas of health care access, community integration, and special education. He is currently a Policy Specialist focusing various issues including alternatives to guardianship, voting rights and special education. Jeff received his law degree from the University of Louisville School of Law and holds a B.A. in Speech Communication from the University of Houston.
Texas Guardianship Reform: Self-Determination, Supported Decision Making, and Transition Planning

Students with disabilities approaching adulthood need planning and preparation to maximize their ability to make their own life choices and decisions. This session reviews what individuals with disabilities, families, school personnel and other professionals need to know about new changes in Texas law on guardianship and transition planning.
During this session we will review the guardianship process in Texas, discuss specific alternatives to guardianship such as supported-decision making, and supports and services that can allow individuals with disabilities meet their support needs without a guardian. Additionally, attendees will review and discuss new transition planning requirements for ARD committees, regarding self-determination, the transfer of parental rights, alternatives to guardianship, and supports and services.

Texas Transitions 101

This session will focus on practical tips to assist families and adult students to better advocate for appropriate transition services. The session will include a discussion of the purpose and goals of transition planning both inside and outside of the school setting. Participants will also review the federal and state requirements for transition planning as well as practical tips for identifying, planning, and advocating for transition services. Additionally, strategies and resources for transition planning will be discussed.
